Delivery to building sites

one of the walks i cover is on a building site of new houses. the roads are covered in mud, the pavements don't exist and there are numerous big vehicles moving around where i need to walk. i raised this with a manger and he said he'd have a look but i don't think a hi vis and crossed fingers is enough to get me round. where do i stand? can i make me own h&s assessment and deem it unsafe to deliver (like we did in the snow?) or can i ask for a h&s rep to come and have a look?

Wouldn't the delivery point for all the houses be the site office for the building site?

I have a building site on my round! After a manager went to look at it, it was decided that the residents would have to collect the post from the delivery office! The site office refused to accept the post for the houses! Not sure why! The dustman can't even collect the rubbish because of access! Not sure why people were moved into the houses to be honest theres young mothers with push chairs walking around with cranes over their heads! Don't know were you stand on h & S as i've only been in the job 6 wks! ha ha! havn't even been issued a uniform yet! All I know is that when the site becomes safe it's gonna put an extra 20 mins on my round and there building even more houses! Great!!!!

thanks for the info brother. part of the problem is that the main dangerous bit is right in the middle of two finished bits. my HCT is locked up at the top of a road. as i look down this road, the right hand side is being built and has no pavement. contractors working on the houses are parking up on the pavement on the left hand side to allow diggers and dumper trucks through. the existing pavement not only has half a dozen vans etc parked on it, it has chuffing great holes with orange barriers round them. now, i'm not very tall and yesterday i was quite worried when the digger swung round. if i hadn't been a bit more aware it could have knocked my block off. i have to walk in the road to get to the completed part of the estate on the other side. still waiting to hear what my manager thought of the site, that will determine my next move but if you say that i should not be delivering to any hard hat area then that would knock out 2/3rds of this walk...........

What you should bear in mind is that if you enter a 'hard hat' area, RM will be quite happy to turn a blind eye and let you carry on. If, God forbid, you were to suffer an injury whilst doing so they would immediately turn round and say you shouldn't have been there!

You should TELL your manager you want a H&S appraisal, and you will meet him at xxx hours (ie your normal arrival time there) that day, otherwise you will deem it not safe to deliver to that part of your round. Then when he turns up see if HE (or SHE) is prepared to walk round with you through all the danger points.

Same manager I spoke to said that he can't see a problem! I told him I was going to check if the area was hard hat and if it was I would not be walking through it. His answer? I'll get you a hard hat! One of my colleagues who is harder nosed (and taller) than me is doing it this week so I'll see what he has to say....Thanks for the advice all.
