RMDCP - Ill health retirement and life assurance

Post by happygolarry »

Good evening everyone

My mum passed away recently and had been a member of the RMDCP scheme for about 7 years. She took her full pension about a year ago as part of their serious ill health scheme. About a week before she filled in these forms she filled out an expression of wish form and as part of the ill health retirement with royal mail it states that life assurance cover from RMDCP will continue for 3 years from her last day of service.

I don't know much about pensions or life assurance and I'm struggling to find any information about this online. Would the life assurance through RMDCP have ended because she took her full pension due to ill health? I can't find any evidence of this being stated in any of the documents she signed or anything they sent. We spoke to Scottish widows and they just advised us that the case had been closed when she took her pension.

Any help or clarification on this would be greatly appreciated. :arrrghhh

Sorry for your loss.

Going by the information in the RMDCP plan guide, it sounds like because your mother had taken her full pension, it means no death benefit would be payable.

See page 18: https://adviser.scottishwidows.co.uk/as ... 0353sw.pdf

The only other way a payment might be forthcoming is if she'd taken out an annuity(income for life) with her pension pot, which had death benefits attached.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
