A new standardised floor layout for the parcels area at Jubilee mail centre has been such a success it’s being implemented around the country.
The layout, which has widened walkways to create more space to work in and to make it easier to move yorks around, has now been rolled out at Sheffield mail centre.
Steve Stapleton, operations lead at Jubilee, says: ‘The layout was being changed by each shift team to suit their own methods, so we needed a standardised layout to give us a safer working environment.’
Productivity in the parcels area has improved since the change, with inward and outward items now being processed 24 hours a day.
Angelica Wallace, parcels operator, says: ‘We used to lack space and the area felt unsafe as we were surrounded by yorks.
‘We didn’t know what work was ours or what was due to be processed next. Our work is now stored in order, so we are able to prioritise our tasks.’
Ramana Sommeshetty, deputy area rep for CWU, adds: ‘Everyone was involved with the changes right from the start, using our experience to give input and shape the new area.’
