CWU Representative who is a Manager.

Post by TheBushBaby »

We ate Greenford have a real difficulty and partly its the memberships' fault, but We have a representative in the Mail Centre who is a representative and an acting Manager in the same unit. Als o He has stood for election as deputy Branch Secretary.

Some members are not happy and some Managers are not happy.

How is this allowed by the CWU, there is an obvious cross over of interests and what is the union position on this ???

Surely he should stand down from ALL union activity on becoming an acting manager.

It is clearly a conflict of interest and the local branch should do something about it. If I was you I would write to the Area Rep/ Branch Chairman and copy it to the Divisional rep and make them aware of your feelings. Depending on your branch rules maybe petition for a special meeting which would probably happen on a sunday but sometimes to make a point you have to make a stand

Advice on this thread on FB. Basically contact branch for their Policy and get his credentials withdrawn, or arrange a vote of no confidence.

Apparently there is no national policy.

I think it is left to individual CWU Branch rules. My former MC's CWU Branch had a rule that any CWU Rep or Officer taking a manager's role had to give up his CWU position.
You should also consult your Area CWU Rep or District Committee for advice.

At my old MC the policy was to resign from any union position before you even apply for a management position be it temp. or permanent

A clear conflict of interest, I would have thought since the Royal Mail Union movement was founded, it would have been clear that being a Rep and a manager is conflict of interest and would have formulated a rule for it. :hmmmm

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

My understanding is no-one stands against him as per normal the membership have the power but don't do anything. I think the main problem is that the lay members are frightened of the responsibility and probably feel they will end up looking stupid but they will get training hence why a lot of offices have no rep these days. The CWU (Area and National) have to step up and engage the members or we will run out of reps
