discrimination?

Post by coachman »

Hi I worked at Doncaster mail centre , and we migrated to Sheffield
Now sheffield staff officially get 20 minutes more breaks than all the
Doncaster staff, is this not discrimination
I no longer work for Doncaster mc, so surely what ever reasons I should
Have different terms and conditions, and the same entitlement
Has the Sheffield staff?

what ever happened in the past shouldn't matter , surely ?

Email Moya Greene and put your concerns to her and the treatment of Doncaster workers I bet Moya deals with this.

What gets me most we have to do everything else sheffield way?
Ie we had a better way of picking leave in doncaster , but no we have to do that the sheffield way?
Do I work for Doncaster mail centre or sheffield mc?
Would love to hear how other migrations have worked ?
There is a two way split at Sheffield , doncaster at one side and sheffield on the other side ?
Why can't the union involve solicitors ? Until we get the same rites there will be no true
Intrercration? I just want to be treated fairly and have the same rites has my collouegues

When Jubilee MC opened up in 2002/03 one of the big problems was that Twickenham and Surbiton had 2 bonus schemes TW got £100 a month PBS and KT got what most offices got which equated to £1.92 a week. Roll forward a couple of years and a deal was reached to have one bonus scheme for JMC which equated to £7.09 a week mainly because in the long term having 2 bonus schemes was causing resentment. Also in time KT & TW would become JMC and you may have to work on both sides. These anomalies have to be blamed on both of CWU and RM management mainly because these problems are supposed to be sorted and ironed out when they plan the migrations ideally.
I would complain to your shift reps and management about it if not satisfied take up right up to plant manager basically start the paper trail whilst it will take time the paper trail helps with getting proof of problems at your MC.
Hope you get it sorted as you are right to be pissed off

How can the length of breaks differ if you are all doing the same indoor work? I thought that there would be a standard across the business? Something definitely doesn't sound right.

Why grass others up? All that is likely to happen is that the others will have their breaks cut, that is if they really do get more which I find difficult to believe as breaks have been standardised, and they aren't going to be too happy with you.

Behave yourself, standing up to a discriminatory act is most certainly not 'grassing others up'. They aren't begrudging that from which someone else benefits, they are asking for the Union and Business to exercise their own standards of fairness for all.

And do you really think that the negotiators would remove one leg from every two legged person in order to not be discriminatory towards those with one leg?

I agree totally, its not about "grassing others Up" but treating all staff equally. Coachman has a legitimate right to seek clarification on an apparent disparity regarding breaks. He is certainly not advocating a reduction of his colleagues "official"
(or maybe not) breaks.

There are no local agreements on length of breaks since they were all standardised by the Way Forward Agreement 2000.
All mcs get the same breaks, which are rigorously enforced these days. I can't see a MC Manager giving staff an extra 20 minutes, or he would be replaced fairly quickly. Nor can I see frontline managers giving staff on their sections extra time as they would be reported (grassed is the term generally used) by their fellow managers.
If for some reason (can't think of any) some staff are getting 20 minutes more, do you really think that reporting it to Moya would get others an extra 20 minutes? Really? No, what would happen would be that the people who are getting 20 minutes extra (allegedly) would lose it. And they are not going to be happy with the people who caused that.
Do DO staff email Moya to complain about others who might finish a bit earlier than them because it is 'discrimination'?

Just to clarify I don't grass people up I just want to be treated fairly.
Just for clarification how long official breaks do MC get?

The trouble is local agreements , and how managers can twist grace reliefs?

The problem that I'm trying to convey apparently doncaster staff sold some kind of break
For penny's in the nineties?
But my question is I don't work for Doncaster mc I work for sheffield mc
So why don't I get the same breaks ,
When at Doncaster I was used to the breaks we had , but know at Sheffield why should sheffield
Staff get 20 minutes more break ?
Like I said I just want to be treated fairly, I don't want breaks taken away from the sheffield
Staff but surely I'm entitled to the same,
And apparatus if you work on a machine u get the same breaks has the sheffield staff .

The OP has stated that there are differences between the break lengths and we are not in a position to argue with that. They have posed a question and it is their right as an employee and possibly a union member to be treated the same as the colleagues from the new MC.

If the OP is getting less favourable terms than other colleagues then it should be investigated and equalised.

And if the employees at the new MC have their break time reduced to meet the agreed spans then so be it. They shouldn't be getting paid to rest whilst others are effectively doing their work.

Sold it for pennies in their nighties?
What a delicious image it conjures up of the MC night staff........
