Should my SSPR rate be more than my basic rate?

Post by anotheruser »

Hi, so glad I found this forum, lots of interesting info and things to read.

Anyways let me get straight to the point. I've been working for Royal Mail almost 10 years now.

I started on a part time contract (25 hours) but over time due to various reasons I've cut down my duty to one day (5 hours) via a job share* several years ago.

All numbers are before tax: My basic pay rate (on my payslip) is £470 and this correlates to what I'm getting paid e.g 470/39 = 12.05, 12.05 x 5 = is the correct number on my payslip. Whenever I do overtime it comes up as SSPR and after reading several threads I think SSPR means the rate we part timers get.

My SSPR rate however comes in at around £12.7, which is obviously higher than my basic.

Firstly does this seem correct?

Secondly, I've compared to my other colleagues (who joined around the same time/have the same basic pay rate/OPG Sorter)..and they're getting £13.5 (approx)?!

I called HR and they said I was being overpaid and that they needed to pass my info on to some other team and they would correct it (cue me banging my head lol). However, months have passed and nothing has changed.

The thing is, this rate has been the same and consistent for myself and a few random colleagues (with the same conditions as I) I've asked.

Either we're all getting paid wrong (?!) or I'm due a back pay of all those overtime hours  and I'm talking about several years here.

Anyone know what's up? *I've thought what could be the reasons and maybe they got my OT rate confused with the person I share the duty with (they haven't been at the company as long as I) but then it wouldn't make sense as my basic pay rate (my contracted hours) are correct and matches my other colleagues.

It'll only take you up to 39 hours.... if you divide your delivery supplement by your contracted hours and then make them up to full time itll work out

eg

pay rate 468.20

24 hour basic 288.12
delivery supplement 14.12

288.12 divided by 24 = 12.005 times 39 = 468.2

288.12 + 14.12 = 302.24 = 12.59

weekday ssrp 15 hours ... 188.9 divided by (0.15) 15 hours = 12.59

basically its incorporates your delivery supplement ( door to door money) into you contract until you get to 39 hours so you don't miss out on any money due to you wage being pro rota when you do over time.

eg when you do full time hours you will get the same d2d money as a full timer.

OMG that was bugging me for ages, thanks to you I've been able to work out the rates!

I was confused about 'delivery supplement' but then I just added the RRIS, Processing and Evening shift supplements on top of the basic rate then divided that amount (by contract hours), which equals exactly the rates of SSPR.

....However, I then worked out those supplements for two of my colleagues (all numbers before tax):

A). 20 hours contract (joined 1/2 years before me):

RRIS - £2.56
Processing - £4.56
Evening - £21.75

Random OT they did - 15.3 hours ((that means half an hour) at £208.48 = £13.4503

B). 12 hours contract (joined 18ms after me and crucially is also on a job share duty i.e he does three days of the week from 6-10pm; I do one weekday 5:30-10pm):

RRIS - £1.54
Processing - £2.74
Late Shift - £13.05

Random OT they did - 17 hours with £228.64 pay = £13.4494

If you divide those numbers by the amount of hours of their contract, they work out exactly the same i.e they are proportionate.

A) RRIS - £2.56/20 = 0.128
Processing - £4.56/20 = 0.228
Late Shift - £21.75/20 = 1.0875

B) Works out exactly the same.

MY supplements:

RRIS - £0.58/4.5 = 0.1288
Processing - £1.03/4.5 = 0.2288
Evening Shift - £2.31/4.5 = 0.5133

Random OT I did - 6.3 hours with £83.69 pay = £12.87538.

At first I was thinking is it because I'm doing a job share and/or because I only do one day but looking at the numbers, all the supplements and basic rates are proportionate.

I only just noticed (how could I miss that out lol) but for some reason I have seemed to be getting a lower allowance at Evening Shift (to my understanding this is for people who finish at 9pm, whereas I finish at 10pm)!

So technically unless I'm wrong, I should have been getting (1.0875 x 4.5 = £4.89) £2.58 extra every week AND that 0.57p per hour of OT that I have done for the past several years.

Wow.

Erm please tell me I'm right and I need to call up HR to claim that back?

(Thanks for the reply vanman btw!)
