Can anyone tell me what is acceptable regarding wearing baseball caps or woolen hats and logo etc

Whats acceptable depends on your manager and how strict they are.

The official line is nothing except Royal Mail uniform can be worn, except for Religious reasons.

Keep the uniform clean and in good repair - it must not be altered except to improve fit - and you cannot add to it, or replace items with some thing else, including
badges or headgear.
Badges of unions recognised by Royal Mail, Long Service and ROSPA badges are allowed, as are a turban or head square where these are worn for religious reasons.

I was asked by a manager to remove my beanie hat as a union rep said a complaint had been made on the basis that the 2cm square logo of a football team was offensive.......is that a reasonable request or work place polotics gone mad !

probably a bit of both.

Strictly speaking the dress code says "and you cannot add to it, or replace items with some thing else, including badges or headgear." and any beanie with a logo (or without) thats not RM issue would fall into that catergory.

As to politics gone mad, I suppose context is the deciding factor.
