Colleagues are using the WCM programme to improve performance

Our National Distribution Centre (NDC) in Northamptonshire is the first of our Logistics sites to be awarded WCM bronze.

It scored 51 points in its audit (regional distribution centres, like mail centres, need 50-plus across a range of WCM pillars and management criteria for bronze).

Since NDC started WCM, it has saved £2.73 million.

WCM champion Riki Ravat says: ‘It is fantastic that our hard work has not only improved the workplace, but the effort put in by our people has been recognised.

'Being the trailblazer has been testing at times as we have had to set the standard for Logistics, but it has been a great challenge and an opportunity to share our learning with the other regional distribution centres.

‘I am particularly proud of how the working environment has improved at NDC through our WCMjourney, and the fact that this has been driven and delivered by our people.’

Just be aware that today, Northern Home Counties Distribution Centre, enrolled into the WCM programme in October 2011, in a fanfare of back-slapping and the visit of senior RM people, received a visit from Bob Phillips, to basically tell us that we're being closed "in under a year". There will of course be a 'consultation exercise', but we all suspect that is just a formality.

So all that money they've spent (i.e. wasted) on huge amounts of posters, laminated signs, release time for floor staff, release time for meetings, meetings about upcoming meetings, repainting machinery etc etc was nothing more than an exercise in cruel deception, trying to convince people that they had a future on that site. This decision, to close the unit, was probably taken - but not disclosed to the CWU, or communicated to those affected - even before the WCM roll-out !

Never heard of Northern Home Counties Distribution Centre, where is it? I've only ever heard of SWDC, NDC and PRDC. I think there is YDC as well (if I had to guess where that is I'd say Yorkshire).

I think there are 8? Regional Distribution Centres left.
The Scottish Distribution Centre is in Wishaw just outside Motherwell.

Royal Mail Hatfield distribution centre jobs 'at risk'
About 135 jobs are at risk as Royal Mail looks to close one of its centres in Hertfordshire, the BBC understands.

The firm said workers at its Hatfield distribution centre were being consulted on changes, as it looked to "modernise its operations".

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said Royal Mail planned to shut its business mail site, but its vehicle operating centre would be unaffected.

A consultation on the closure is due to last about six months.

Royal Mail has not confirmed whether it will shut the distribution depot but in a statement said it was planning to reduce the number of bases it works from across the country.

It said 135 workers are employed at its distribution centre and a further 124 at its vehicle operating centre.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Faced with increasing parcel volumes and declining letter volumes, Royal Mail must constantly review how it manages its operations.

"The review is aimed at allowing us to deliver the most efficient, consistent and reliable service to Royal Mail customers and help secure long-term employment and job security.

"Our intention is to make changes without compulsory redundancies."

Tom Walker, Northern Home Counties branch secretary for the CWU, said the union thought the closure was "premature" and there were "alternative opportunities" Royal Mail should consider before deciding to close the depot.

Management were briefed on the new agreement in my area yesterday.
They were told that all current agreements remain valid.
Somebody asked about WCM.
After some huffing and puffing and checking of notes the position was that the original WCM agreement was no longer valid but that the new agreement committed the union to discussions over a new agreement.

The union's position on WCM is clear..

The company has now been informed of this decision and for the purpose of
complete clarity the CWU is out of WCM both now and in the future

While it's still called WCM their can be no agreement, the union would look stupid...but it's amazing what a name change and a couple of other minor superficial changes will do.
