Anyone heard any more info about the new PDAs that RM have supposedly ordered? 120,000 would probably account for every walk in the country and I'm wondering in MCs if Tracked and Specials may well both get scanned on them. When you think about it, the only differences between them in terms of processing in a MC is that Specials get scanned in and out and a printed dun is sent with each bag.
Now with the Duns it may say 20 for example on the dun but who's to say that the 20 items on the dun are the ones in the bag, the only way to be sure would be to check the numbers printed on the dun with the numbers on the items, that can't be done with anything that is sent from one MC to another as it doesn't print the barcodes on them duns.
If Tracked and Specials were both done on PDAs then each item could be scanned in when it enters the MC and then each item would then get scanned out to whichever office. The Duns would be sent electronically and if the office needs a hard copy they could just go onto the network and print one. It would have the added bonus at DOs that they would then know how many Tracked items they're getting.
At the DO end the items would be scanned in as having arrived and then they'd get scanned to their walks by whoever does it.

Re: The New PDAs
They haven't actually ordered anything yet, they have just given notice for manufacturers to apply for the contract. I expect it will be a couple of years before we actually get them. I think there are about 65k walks in the country in total, of cause this is a constantly decreasing number. Don't forget Parcelforce use the CN3s as well so I expect they would get any replacement at the same time. But hopfully 120k would be enough for every walk to have one, its a pain having to deliver tiny tracked items by van because the HCTs aren't allowed to take them. As for using them for scanning SDs I think that was the idea with the current PDAs but there was some software problem which stoped it happening in the end. I think the replacement PDA will have to be used for SDs though because the existing RMGTT scanners are well past it.
