Any rules on SA?

Post by hubbahubba »

On our early shift,we have to process collections from the surrounding areas on a Saturday.
We work 6am-2pm Tues-Fri,and now they have just moved the whole shift forward to 7am-5pm on a Saturday! It used to be 6am-4pm,then they changed to 630am-430pm.Shift manager says this is because the DO's are going through revisions(p+l) and so,the DO staff are finishing later, meaning collections are later, meaning they arrive at the MC later.
The problem is we do 8 hours all week, then come the last day, when most people are knackered we have to do 10 hours!
This is because all duties on early's have a 2 and a half hour SA on the front(not opitional)!
When we said we didn't want the SA,management just changed peoples duites so that they finish slightly early on weekdays, and made them do the full 10hr saturday!
Local CWU says its got to be done to protect the collections from being done at a different MC,but i know most people would rather lose the saturday collections and take their chances, fed up being held to ransom by RM while most people are getting on with their lives at the weekend.
Does anybody know if there is any set of rules regarding SA at national level? For example,if they can be attached to a whole shift?
Cheers for any help on this, lot of pissed off people at the mo! :mad

i take it you work at southampton. Its down to your local union being strong and protecting your working conditions.I work in the dorset mail centre .We have no sa assigned to any duty on earlies which are full time.We have no early turn staff who do more than 8 hours on a sat .We do have weekend staff who do 10 hrs but that is all duty time.Surely if the staff do not want to do 10 hrs and part of that is sa,they should just give up the sa,its not compulsary to do overtime and your union should fight it for any individuals who do not wish to do it!! Again with the saturday content your union should be argueing that the second class element does now not exist on saturday since royal mail changed the 2c operation.Early shift does 2c mon to friday only

That's strange because the DO staff are having to start later because the M/C's can't get the mail to us any earlier.

So the M/C's are later because the DO's are later because the M/C's are later.

The problem is a lot of PO collections come to SOMC on a saturday, and they are obviously further away than our own collections.Last wagon not in til 415/430

can be attached, but is it morally right in todays world? winning the arguement with individuals who have guareenteed earnings with attached s/a' isnt easy. pick our s/a's once a year by aggregate and seniority as a tie breaker.
