7.5 tonne lorries

Hi people, i have worked for royal mail for around 2 years now as a postie im quite enjoying it. I think i would now like to move up and maybe start driving the 7.5 ton lorries that drop the mail off in the morning, does anyone on here know anything about getting into this.

Them lorries are generally run by logistics so if you were to move over to logistics you could theoretically find yourself doing a run from any of the MCs served by the local logistics depot to any of the DOs served by them MCs. Try contacting the manager of the distribution area of the local MC, they may well be able to help

You can always ask if they need "Spare Drivers"

Then you'll have the fun of trying to get 5 years worth of Driver CPC into 2 years...

hi guys,i work at a MC as a 7.5 ton driver and was told that we coudnt go back on deliveries and vice versa,we are totally separate units and could only apply for a transfer which lets face it dont seem to happen much now,any 1 else been told this

Is your MC closing,if not then i would of thought it would just be a run of the mill transfer.
If it is closing then where are you supposed to go?

Sully will most likely come under logistics now and not under the MC so could end up doing runs out of another MC. If Sully has got an artic license then another possibility is doing artic runs between MCs and RDCs

my old mc shut in jan of this year but when we was at old site with deliveries they wouldnt let us back on deliveries so we had to go to our new site on distribution so we had no choice,to be honest there was always a bit of a rift between deliveries and distribution anyway

You're better off driving anyway, Deliveries have gone downhill recently, you need to be a donkey to do this job now.

Royal Mail won't train you anymore so you've got little chance unless you've driven a 7.5 tonne in a previous job.

Even if you have/get a licence what are the chances of actually getting a professional driving job? I have never seen one advertised...

rom another function be included in a distibution resign for a professional driver role.

hi can anyone clear this one up.as i cover professional driving duties on a regular basis as a reserve.how do i actually get a job as a professinal driver if i can`t get into a distribution vacancy.
as im on a 40 hour contract it seems to me that only ag driving duties with between 32 and 25 hours are advertised in distribution.
im actually attached to processing so can anyone tell me the criteria should a vacancy arise for a driver in distribution what is the order as i have good seniority do ag distribution drivers come before myself.

Logistics depots will probably cover 2 or 3 MCs and some will obviously also cover an RDC. I would guess that logistics will have a separate seniority list so your probably going to have to put in for a transfer to logistics.

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point soon drivers who do runs out of one MC might be made to do runs out of another MC to cover sick or holiday and ones who have artic licences (class 1 I think it is) may get put on artic runs between MCs and RDCs.

So the more qualified you are, the more likely you get moved about, I wonder if there is paid travel time and would that be part of your recorded driving hours mmm, just a thought

If you do apply make sure you have the correct group on your licence. A few years back we had a problem at my office, a lot of staff were driving mini buses.......turned out a lot of the staff did'nt have the group on their licence to drive something over a certain size/weight. Managers ended up having to remove seats so people could drive them. It all depended on when they passed their driving test.
