Why do they weigh the dust? If nobody understands why (or wants to understand why) then it's all too easy to mock it.

It is so they can fine the customers for using badly made envelopes that produce waste that cannot be recycled efficiently - more crap, more revenue !!!!

Yeah but did a mate of a mate of a bloke who was in a canteen tell you this? :hmmmm

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

"World Class Mail - you couldn't make it up!!!" But some people will have a damn good try, eh?

I'm still on the fence when it comes to WCM - don 't know whether I would agree with it or not, I take it as I see it and I've seen a lot of apparently silly things happening, like weighing dust. But instead of scoffing at this and coming to ridiculous conclusions, I've asked the guys who do it why they do it and the reasons seem quite logical.
I've questioned why certain new "rules" regarding safety have been brought in and have been given sensible answers - on the other hand I've asked why certain things were going to be changed changed and totally disagreed with the reasons.

But at least I've asked and not just stood back and codemned it out of hand. When I make up my mind on WCM, it will be based on what I've learned by asking questions and any results I've seen - good or bad.

What I won't do is make schoolkid statements like "It's sh*t 'cos it is."

Probably the most pro-WCM post on this forum so far and as I already said, so far I'm neither pro nor anti.

How are they supposed to know which customer is responsible for the dust?
Is it done after each batch of Mail? :confused
If so. Is enough extra time allowed, in order to complete the work in time?

as an ex employee the weighing of dust is done for the following reason.

dust in the machines leads to breakdowns and needs cleaning. Both cost money and are in WCM terms not value adding (its a genuine WCM term) When trying to lower or stop dust gathering the only way to really know if your making a difference is by wieght. Usually RM would try something and say it looks likes it worked. This is just a bit more scientific. So when they try to lessen dust by whatever way they can measure to see if it worked.

whether wcm is the asnwer or not i have no idea but it is very logical and relies on accurate measurement.

Thanks hotel. That's the explanation I was given too.

Andy, it's nothing to do with fining customers. Do we as a company even have that right, legally? I doubt it. Not to mention the "biting the hand that feeds you" side of it. Probably more a case of suggesting alternatives to customers.

I dont know if we do. I doubt it. There is lots we dont do when customers are not to spec. If we get too picky they will go elsewhere, which is not good for any of you employed by Rm or my pension now that i dont

the thing to remember about wcm is that it started in car factories. If you have ever seen programs about them you will see how they look to save one second or a fraction of a second at a time. This is quite different from RM.

I like WCM however for it to work the managers need to believe it and do it properly and ultimately for it to work everyone has to take part and contribute. If management doesnt do it or staff dont want to it wont work as well as it should.

Its not about painting the floor ect though you will do that at the start. though from what i heard saw too many think it is.

Perhaps the afternoon Mech Manager at our office needs to brush up on his WCM.....

We went into work at 10pm on Thursday night to:-

No Tardis's on the machine
No Yorks (empty or full of trays)
Bags and bag labels strewn over the floor

oh and over 50 Tango's of work - untouched - by the afternoon staff, because they decided to put them ALL on the packets.

As you can imagine - the night crew were NOT best pleased, and yet we STILL got the MCM screaming at us at 1030pm "WHY AREN'T THESE MACHINES RUNNING".
And after a while, you can work on points for style,
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.

You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.

Don't worry about it. I've come across some very stupid sounding WCM ideas. Some of them turned out to be a good idea after all. Others I still think are daft. Still, that's only my opinion.

If dust causes breakdowns then surely the answer is to hoover the machine
at the start of shift, although in my MC the manager almost has a heart attack
when you lift a lid to hoover despite there being an eigth of an inch of "snow"
lying in the machine. So if he tells us not to hoover we don't....i can live with
the stoppages/breakdowns..... he cant but hey ho thats his problem,
he simply cant have his cake and eat it (although he would like to)
