World class mail coming soon, Dingo advice please

We have WCM coming soon to our place, managers busy getting ready already shooting off on visits to other sites to learn about it. They are trying to get involvment from members and they tell us a cwu rep is going to be a pillar lead in warrington as part of the agreement?

On here Dingo said even thou its in the agreement we shouldnt be part of it, the warrington pillar lead was agreed at union div level and the rm director its said? what should ordinary members do, join in or not?

The only people interested in our MC are the brown nosers,its all just a job/costcutting exercise dressed up as "the next big thing"AVOID!

i agree it is a cost and job cutting exercise but its being thrown in are faces that its in the agreement and they are saying the rep in warrington is a lead on this and its all agreed... what is the ofical policy from cwu because dingo says stay away and are div is agreeing?

I think at first there was a LTB (prob a link on here somewhere)advising members not to co-operate with any WCM activities.After the 2010 agreement though,i believe the CWU signed up,and now fully endose WCM?

The majority of people will not have to take part in any world class mail stuff at all, except listen to the managers going on about it because they have no choice but to show enthusiasm. For those who want to take part, of which we have ten clipboard holders, yes ten, they can change their hours to what they like, say goodbye to normal duties for years, attend meetings and have a really easy life. Most of the ten were brown nosers, former acting managers or close friends of managers who were asked directly, none applied to an advert on the wall. First part of world class mail involves keeping everything tidy and then the start of ideas to make things work more efficiently. What comes later on no ones saying. Funny thing, after about a year and a half of this thing at Bristol Mail Centre its no more cleaner or efficient. Also what happens to the ten people when it all does eventually end, their not going to be to happy about tipping out bags and sorting again after having been the recycling pillar for four years.

in Glasgow so far,it's all about cutting jobs! it is not about
improving the service to the public and never was and never

A manager anywhere in Royal Mail has to say that world class mail is working well in Bristol Mail Centre, he wants to sell it to you and also he has no choice if he wants to keep his job. It works so well that we failed 2000 1st class packets on Monday. World class mails was signed up to by the CWU in the 2010 agreement so a local rep has to allow it to take place in the mail centre. They dont help it along or make sure it works well and anything that affects our terms or health and safety is jumped on. Im avoiding it, and ideas, the chosen ones are rolling out in the area I work in, seem to have been designed to fail later on anyway.

The whole WCM crap is derailing itself in the Wolverhampton MC.

Let me break down what has happened so far...

1. Painted all the walkways with a supposedly none slip material which is also either bright yellow or green to highlight the walk ways. A few days after completion it needed doing again because equipment destroyed it. Should also be noted that it really isn't none slip when your feet are wet after coming in from the rain/snow.

2. Notice boards absolutely everywhere, none of them directly showing the staff what is going on. Most information is printed on A4 pieces of paper and somehow manages to fit a 6month table on a per day basis. With any luck they will hang a magnifying glass near it so we can read it.

3. Staff who jumped on the WCM band wagon knew it was going to be an easy time of sitting in the offices doing bugger all, eventually they took advantage of it by coming in before duty hours and doing their scheduled duty hours as and when it suited them. Some staff even classed it as over time and still didn't turn up for their duty.

4. Everyone was asked if they wanted to join the "movement" but it ended up managers picking their friends and other wasters in the mail centre which has meant nothing is getting done in terms of what people want change wise.

5. Areas were tackled one at a time, this meant some areas decided they wanted to consume extra areas of space from elsewhere without any consultation with the staff of the affected areas.

6. The same thing happened as above but instead this was a manager assigning themselves a new desk area which is actually smaller than their previous area. The previous area is now completely unused and wasted.

7. All of the proposals get sent to a team from upstairs in the offices who then see how easy it is to implement something and then waste countless hours with colouring in, making posters and other stupid things.

8. Things which will actually benefit the staff are put into second place, the people who call the shots are the managers whom think they have a clue about an area after coming out of nowhere and running it for a month or so.

9. The WCM scheme was recently reviewed by the head honcho himself, turns out most of what has been done was an absolute waste of time and from what I gather it ended up failing its review.

10. After failing its review staff are being asked to take time out of the work schedule to make suggestions, many of which are taking advantage and using it as an extra break. Those that do contribute are repeating previous suggestions because no one is getting told what has already been suggested.

11. The new suggestions go back upstairs to the men in suits who then get their crayons and glue out again and take FULL credit for the work.


Conclusion; It is an absolute disgrace, I strongly advise all people to revolt against such a pathetic attempt at keeping us quiet whilst they are busy sorting out the culling of mail centres and employees.

Next Wednesday all PEC and Divisional Reps and Royal Mail senior managers are visiting Gatwick Mail Centre who has already achieved a bronze award for World Class mail. Royal Mail who are in dire straights financially as will become clearer over the next month still seem to be investing heavily in World class mails. It is similar to lots of previous fads which Royal Mail have adopted like TQM , Customer First , Royal Mail Way and Creating our Future. All of these projects have previously failed.

The PEC have endorsed a policy on World class mail"s. Now in terms of having a pillar lead as a unit rep I think this is a key debate. Some argue that if we have control of the pillars we can stop Royal Mail"s plan to reduce the role of the union. Others counter that units reps may lose sight of their real role and get hooked into moving the pillars forward.

Hopefully after the event at Gatwick we can adopt a united policy to deal with World class mail"s which is coming to both RDCs and Delivery offices soon.

Bristol Mail Centre assessed for Bronze Award on Thursday 10th February with visit by many managers and the Japanese professor. Already said that if it fails then local managers heads will role, which is moved sideways for 12 months then back again. Cant see it failing after hotels are booked and expenses paid though.

So those of us who will be getting wcm soon will be told of this policy? as you said the union has been slow adopting a policy leaving the blokes on the shop floor to make different desisions. For what its worth i think having a rep as a pillar lead is a mistake as he will have to toe the line and why would the management want it? just another way of keeping the union sweet by letting us think we are in the game but at the same time keeping us down!

I see the southern mcs have already bought into wcm with or without union involvement... by being slow adopting a policy have we missed the boat again?
