Re: Sheffield Mail centre
Im assuming they will be extending Sheffield mail centre to fit in mails from Doncatser and Hull. Unless of course its big enough already, Ive never been so I woud not know. Its not like we are going to find anything out until after Christmas I imagine though.

Re: Sheffield Mail centre
They are indeed planning on extending the building! Already big enough? It's not big enough before the proposed amalgamation of the other 2 offices!

Re: Sheffield Mail centre
From my limited knowledge of Sheffield MC I don't see where they can extend as there is a road at one side and a railway at the other.
I think the extension story may turn out to be a red herring and Sheffield will close along with Doncaster and Hull with a completely new mail centre built elsewhere.

The road is at the front, the railway behind. They are extending sideways into what is now the car park, with (presumably) the car park going into the wasteland on the far side of that. You might be right about the red herring but there is ample space for the planned extension (indeed there's been a large, temporary marquee in the space for the last few Xmas's.

Re: Sheffield Mail centre
Are Royal Mail seriously thinking people will travel from Hull to work at Sheffield?
I'd imagine Sheffield MC will be chaotic while the building work is in action too, diversions to Doncaster anyone

As far as I understand the agreement, no one will be able or expects to transfer to Sheffield due to the distance involved. A serious problem in regard to redundancies as there will clearly not be enough jobs available within delivery units to accomodate all the processing staff not wanting EVR. The site is too remain as a collection and delivery hub, I would expect a reduction in the collection requirement to the current three waves a day as the business squeezes even more "savings" out of an already tight operation.
There are 251 less head count expected in the Sheffield south area, which includes the Doncaster and Hull MCs, most of those will be in Hull and even within these figures I suspect many more part time /casual staff will be employed so the overall figure.
Its not good and no one seems to have the answers needed, I do not expect that what was anoounced Friday will happen as planned anyway.
I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.

Re: Sheffield Mail centre
Yesterday mails brought to Doncaster by Sheffield customers as they were told mail centre closed !!!
Sheffield has problems when it rains, snows and when it is busy at the Meadowhall shopping centre but still first choice for mails in South Yorkshire, unbelieveable.

Re: Sheffield Mail centre
Sheffield Mail Centre has been open all week! There's been a number of staff not turning in because of the conditions but it has been open. The place has only had any problems in the most exceptional of circumstances weather wise. Only affcted by rain once, when half of Sheffield was flooded about 3 years ago. Snow is no worse than anywhere else. Occassionally can be affected by traffic jams outside but even then you're only talking about rare occassions.
Why was the place chosen? Simple... it's all about the cost, and SMC is the cheaper of the options.
