Royal Mail Collects Hat-Trick Of International Awards For Operational Excellence
01/11/2010

Royal Mail’s programme to improve safety, quality of service and efficiency in its mail centres has been recognised by an international awards programme that encourages operational excellence among major businesses across the world.

The World Class Manufacturing Association presented Royal Mail with three bronze awards for its achievements in improving performance at its Cardiff, Gatwick and Northern Ireland mail centres at a ceremony in London on Friday 29 October.

The improvements at the mail centres forms the foundation of Royal Mail’s World Class Mail programme to drive up standards to improve the working environment and quality of service for customers.

The World Class Mail programme, now rolled out to a further 14 centres across the UK, is a comprehensive system of continuous improvement, made up of 10 "pillars" ranging from safety to people development. It actively engages frontline staff, training and encouraging them to look at how improvements can be made in each individual step of the many processes that take place. Often simple changes can have a dramatic effect on productivity and, when multiplied across the business, can lead to significant savings.

The programme underpins Royal Mail’s commitment to transform the business into a modern postal operator and is now rolling out across all its operations over the next two years.

Mark Higson, Managing Director of Royal Mail, said: "Royal Mail is committed to achieving world-class levels of performance across our operations with our people fully involved as we progress the transformation and modernisation of the company.

"Through our World Class Mail programme, Royal Mail has made significant improvements in safety, quality of service and efficiency in our pilot units. Every single person whose enthusiasm and commitment has played a part in making the programme a success should be proud of their efforts and the awards we have received."

Tim Jones, Head of World Class Mail at Royal Mail, said: "World Class Mail gives everyone an opportunity to be actively involved in our transformation on the operational floor - not in the office.

"Those who are introducing the World Class mail techniques have found it exciting and have relished the chance to improve safety, quality and their working environment while also providing an improved service to our customers."

At Gatwick Mail Centre, employees improved productivity by identifying that dust fibres from envelopes were the cause for frequent stoppages of the mail sorting equipment. From a machine stopping every 1,400 letters, it can now run for several shifts without any problems.

Machine operator Marcelo Suarez-Mori said: "We cleaned every part of the machine to get it back to a ‘factory-fresh’ condition and organised a cleaning rota among the shifts and this has improved productivity by reducing the number of stoppages."

He added: "I have found it extremely satisfying to have been able to make practical suggestions that have helped improve the performance of Gatwick Mail Centre."

The World Class Manufacturing Association encourages organisations across the world to strive for operational excellence and world-class performance.

Its principles are based on a comprehensive system of continuous improvement developed by Dr Hajime Yamashina, Professor Emeritus Kyoto University, and which encourages people at all levels of an organisation to share ideas.

yea, that made me laugh aswell..this is the sort of shyte comments you have to put up with, all those actively involved in this crap seem to think its brilliant (mainly because they are given a nice pay rise & oppertunity to sit in a room with a prit stick & paper..drawing pictures all day, justifying this project) the only good its done here is keep the floor clean, managers running around picking box labels & elastic bands up all the time,1 extra cleaner could have the same effect in reality. instead of blowing around 25 mill on this..how about spending it on getting the manning levels right in order to clear the mail! i have heard storys of us failing by around 40k & the mcm "happy the floor is clean" :arrrghhh get these wcm people back on shift sorting mail pronto :nana

YEAH ....and you've got to laugh (dont know 'bout any other M.C ) at the amount of people that have been of their duties to perform these WCM roles to draw their pictures, tape the floor off,and various other piddlin little things then managers etc.wonder why we start to fail despatches .......
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

all that the people who are participating in this WORLD CLASS FAIL charade are doing is help make a incompetent management structure look competent.in the NIMC we had the MCM COMPLAINING THAT PEOPLE WERE PUTTING LABELS AND ELASTICS in small red sleeves, meanwhile the nightshift was falilng by thousands of items every night, good to see he has got his priorities right,if you,ll pardon the pun.

our managers do not listen to suggestions, staff involvement i think not for instance inverting mail on ilsm machine it slows the production process down and damages the ilsm and causes the staff to make several time consuming movements instead of one sweeping movement. the idea that this helps the feeder is a mute point as the feeder manages perfectly well whichever way the mail is presented. it would be interesting to know operators points of view, nobody in my office thiks it is a sensible idea but no one is listening.

Every mail centre involved in WCM is experiencing the same things...the same people pissing about washing down machines, putting tape on floors, drawing diagrams and generally not making a blind bit of difference.
Meanwhile MC s are struggling to get the mail out the door.
If it wasnt so pathetic it would be laughable.

Can anyone find a website for the World Class Manufacturing Association? I can't.

The only references which appear are in regard to the three awards given to Royal Mail.

on the brightside, when one of your big customer complains about their mail not being delivered on time you can bring them into a wcm mail centre and show them how clean the floor thus putting their mind at ease.

And when they ask where all the staff have gone you can tell then that everyone was deemed too inefficient by the Japanese Professor...apart from the 500 cleaners and the guys upstairs playing with prit-stick and crayons.

I wonder how many on here who seem to be critical of WCM are actually involved with WCM, and how many have only heard about it through a mate who speaks to a bloke from the local MC.... :hmmmm
