Currently there are a number of regional mail centre reviews and these include the North East , South East , London and Anglia. In line with the agreement Royal Mail do not have to give their perfered option until 90 days after the mail centre review has started.

We had WTLLs yesterday to tell us that due to the speculation and rumours circulating in London,
they wanted to clarify the situation. They told us that RM had set out the figures - declining mail volumes,
MC capacities, and projected processing figures, and the CWU and CMA have 90 days to look at these
and make any counter claims if they think figures are wrong or something has been missed.
RM will then make their proposals about MCs in first week of September, then CWU and CMA then have
another 90 days to make a counter case, so the final decision should be known before Christmas - though
I think they may well delay the announcement until after the Christmas Pressure period.

Heard from a "in the know" union rep that 4 of the 7 MC's in the SW region are for the chop.He says Dorset,Portsmouth,Truro and Exeter are going, and Bristol Plymouth and Southampton are staying,in one form or another.Anyone else heard similar,or just another rumour? :hmmmm

There's absolutely no doubt that Truro and Portsmouth will go as they are both very small. Bristol is safe because of it's size and location. If Southampton is staying and takes in Portsmouth and Dorset no doubt a new MC will be needed or could the existing one be extended?
Isn't Exeter quite a big MC and didn't it get 3 ILSMs plus mail also goes via it's airport. Where would Exeter mail go - Bristol?

Just looking at Southampton MC on Google Earth there isn't room for them to extend. Dorset has 2 iLSMs and is getting some CSS machines soon. Possibly Dorset would take all SP area and the most westerly SO code areas and Southampton would take all the PO area

Also Plymouth only has 1 CFC and isn't it an old MC? Therfore more likely that Plymouth and Truro will close, Exeter also has good road links via the M5.

Ah ah. No Plymouth has Ilsms too plus bags of room I think. Exeter is very cramped. Ok the airport is there but to get down to Penzance would take ages as the M5 doesn't go that way. Plus oh dear me, the Scily Isles. Oh so complicated

according to our Union Rep the Mail Centre Review for the SW/South region is due to begin in 6 months time and will take about 6 months to complete. Exeter is cramped and cant expand but it is about to get some new machinary and has good road and airport links. however he also tells me that the cost per item to process is one of the most important things they look at.

New machinery is a red herring as it takes two seconds to remove and reinstall elsewhere.

quite correct Jennifer, they have just moved one of the CFCs where i work , took them 2 days. machinary would be at the bottom of their list when looking at closures etc.
