Royal Mail has the responsibility of providing a public service and all parties accept that there is an obligation on all employees to play their part in maintaining the kind of service which the public has the right to expect. The nature of the service makes a measure of overtime working necessary. Employees may be required to work overtime during periods of particularly high levels of traffic, such as Christmas or where a scheduled Sunday or Bank Holiday forms part of locally agreed duty arrangements. Such periods should be staffed on a voluntary basis, wherever possible. The arrangement and allocation of overtime or variations of hours of attendance will be subject to the processes in the Industrial Relations Framework This agreement does not conflict with the individual’s rights and obligations under the Working Time Regulations.

what i can understand it should be on a voluntary basis... or am i wrong

The nature of reserves is to cover all duties across all shifts. Reserves have to be flexible to ensure coverage.

Our reserves are attached to shifts, and are not usually asked to cover other shifts,
though they may occasionally if they have experience/training in a particular area.
Apart from our weekend workers, and some nights workers, most duties on Sundays
are on overtime, though you do generally have to be a Sunday Officer - committing
yourself to work at least every other Sunday, much like SA.

I wopr5k in Southampton and they are trying to introduce Sunday working. They asked forvolunteers but got very little respose and so now they have imposed a resign which has created duties to include Sundays (but not for every duty). This is causing a lot of people unnecessary stress and some are talking of resigning. I have heard that Southampton is the only MC that is trying to impose Sunday duties. Is this a form of bullying?? I actually volunteered to perform Sunday hours on a rotate basis, but I do not want to work every Sunday as my partner is a delivery postie and Sunday is our onlyt day as a family. Any ideas of what we should do? I believe the union are all for this :P

That statement might have been relevant if it had been posted in 1910.

Surely It is still relevant the Goverment just made it more difficult and changed its name to the Universal Service Obligation.

You're spot on there Hubbahubba! Although I can't see anything in Elnino2's post that could narrow a search down. Although it would be wise, not to add any further details which could identify her.

There have been several situations, where people have ended up being disciplined for things they've said on here. But if they can't identify you, they can't discipline you. :hmmmm Most of the incidents (but not all) happened during the 2007 Strikes, when people weren't as careful about their annonymity. We all learned that lesson the hard way. I even had to have one of my threads deleted, because they didn't like what I said. Even though I hadn't used any names or dates, and I could prove everything I'd said in there. :hmmmm

These warnings have really made me quite annoyed. What the hell happened to freedom of speech. If we cannot say what we feel or think without repurcussions then democracy is bull***t. So where do you go to vent your fears and greivances - what was the point of the stand made by the Tolpuddle Martyrs. They fought for their rights and the rights of future employees, and now more than 200 years later, we are giving it all up. This country is reverting back to Victorian times and we appear to just let it all happen :P

It's not just RM though is it, there are obstacles right across social network, generating an unjust society. Anyway, thanks for your concern hubbabubba.

Therfe will always be those, who abuse whatever systems are in place, to protect themselves. RM, like so many others, are scared of the truth, and will go out of their way to protect themselves from it, whenever they do something wrong.

It's not a "freedom of speech" issue, or even an RM problem, but more down to the fact that any employer will take a dim view of employees using the 'Net to voice possibly one-sided or biased opinions, so should you wish to post contentious or critical posts, anonymity is wise.
