Hgv driving licence

Post by Marzenka »

I know there was an opportunity to apply for a hgv driving licence and get a position as a driver.
Am a postie currently but would love to get qualification and become a driver.
Does RM still providing free course for employees??
I have no idea where to start. How to apply??
Any suggestions please??
Did anybody get a license recently through the company???
Thank you in advance Marzena

Forget about getting RM to train you. They had an idea of running a driver academy some 2 years ago. It was around the time when deliveries were going through a lot of rapid change and the job was going to get a lot harder. It was well oversubscribed. Only few of us were lucky to get on it. Many were left out. I am a postie too and I hold the license and all the cards but I didn't actually manage to get a driving job at RM. I was told many things but it never materialised so If you really want to drive you may have to look elswhere.

If you want it, you go get it. Find out the email of the logistics sector manager, email them frequently asking for changeover training first then volunteer for overtime. You are Royal Mail so you get priority over agency, if they are employing agengy when there are Royal Mail staff that want to do the work that's not right. Get the details of the union area rep overseeing logistics, get them on board to support your case.

You are right but I already given up there is no point approaching anybody. This company proved many times over they are not interested in investing in their own people. They'd rather ge tan agency guy who is often released once pressure period is over than train their own staff. A member of staff who was loyal for over a decade and who's gone out and qualified at his own expense. By the way 2 managers already were given my details and knew about my background, neither of them was interested after all.

100% agree. At our place they've taken on around 30 drivers in the last six months. Anyone who is employed by Royal Mail and has a class 1 comes first.
Most planes have gone, trains have gone (Still contracting out) It's all going on the already rammed road network.

They have a few openings at hubs dotted around the UK advertised as "apprenticeships". They're offering £22k and a 13 month contract and afterwards you'll have your HGV licence (you won't have to pay for it.

Check success factors out if any apply to your area.

Obviously 22k is the same as a 30hr postie contract outside London, but it won't take you the full 13 months to get trained.

All the jobs, internal or otherwise, are on Success Factors now. You have to wait for positions to become available but you have to keep on checking and apply.

If you have the licence and cards ETC and work for Royal Mail I wouldn't leave and attempt to join some other company to be honest. I did and immediately regretted it as I walked into a poorly organised, below board company and immediately returned to Royal Mail. I had to stay in the office i was in for 6 Months but after that I found something and transferred to a mail center.

There ARE opportunities outside Royal Mail and plenty of reputed companies are hiring but I'd go so far as to say that 80% of them want 3 years or more experience. The other 20% are either horrible companies to work for or pay a little over the minimum.

As I say, don't bother asking around at your depot. Check success factors every day and apply when they come up. Otherwise you'll get lost in the system

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Just applied, passed my hgv theory, hazard perception and CPC last week, and with 25 years service, I'd like to think that would hold me in good stead. Don't know why it's 13 months though. Left to work on the railways last year, wasn't for me but that was 18 months training, but I had to learn how to drive a train!

I’d recommend asking HR if the company still offers support for getting the HGV licence. I also found it helpful to check out some guides online to see what the process is like. Good luck, hope it all works out for you!

I have tried and failed number of times, I have been told different things but I was unable to gain access to success factors since at least 2018. This is why I am at such disadvantage. I might give HR a call to sort it out but I have been runaround before.

Why don't you just take a driving job elsewhere? They are crying out for HGV drivers in this country, you could get a job within a couple of days.
