1 hour breaks

Post by dudius »

I assume most (if not all) mail centres still have the 20 minute grace break: either added on to the standard 40 minutes or taken separately.

My question; is anyone surprised this hasn't been taken away yet?

1 hour break? Really? It’s like working for a different firm. All areas have different rules.

Yep 1 hour break in a 8 hour shift is the norm for processing staff in Mail centre plus smoke break every 15 mins.......Been in the job for over 30 years and have worked in every sector.....Delivery staff have to work a lot harder but always seem to be the target of the cuts🤔🤔.....Hardest job in mail centre is waiting for your drink to be dispensed from the Klix coffee machines.

Work rates are monitored in MCs, the managers have to count up all work to hand each hour (see them counting it each hour) and they have to account for every hour that they use. If we head over to a work area and that work area doesn't have the hours (budget) then we'll get turned away.

The % of agency/causal staff has greatly increased over the last few years. Apart from a handful of casuals who got made into posties during Covid, and excluding any staff transferring from elsewhere, we've not had any new staff for over 10 years. Seems like whenever anyone lease for whatever reason, they get replaced with casuals/agency.

With the way that RM is going, I don't think it'll be long before RM are closely watching work rates in all types of office

Aren’t Full Time given a Hour because technically there not authorised to leave the premises.

Used to come under “ Security Of The Mails”.

Or Mail Integrity..

Never heard of that. We get staff leave the site during their breaks, probably more so for early and late shifts where they've got the choice of various cafes and drive throughs (McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC). Also some staff will pop down the local petrol station during their breaks to put some petrol or diesel in their car

Role calls aren't done during any evacuations, they stopped doing it a few years ago

In the event of a fire the Fire Service always assume that someone could be inside and will do their own check of the building.
