Don't forget that Birmingham is a very big MC and so is Wolves. Even after the closures there will still be some MCs very close to each other, eg Greenford and Jubilee. Sheffield and Leeds will both remain simply because if the huge geographical area they cover.
Wolves is likely to take in Shrewsbury and Birmingham will take Worcester.

I'm just thinking a bit longer term than you.

I think Ipswich will go into Chelmsford as this was the plan when SEAMAC was built. The NR postcode area is very rural so it's difficult to see Norwich closing. I think the others you have mentioned are spot on.

Smaller MCs that close might possibly reopen as super-DOs, with a number of DOs merged into the same building, possibly another thing that might do is open them as sequencing centres with a load of CSS machines

Now that the policy of putting CSSs in DOs has proved an abject failure, the new idea is to group CSSs together to form super-DOs, and under-utilised MCs (or ex-MCs) will be used for just this purpose.
Seems like PO (for one) will go down this route in the New Year, and be used like that until the new SO/PO/BH MC is built (if it ever is.. )

With the threat of privatisation and the first reading yesterday does anyone think it'll stop RM's mail centre cull or will they still go ahead with the closures up and down the country to try and tidy up the company so it might seem a bit more attractive to any interested parties.

IMO it's more likely to make RM speed up the MC cull. We weren't expecting the London closures to take place until 2013.
They still aren't telling us the timescales, but it seems it will probably be faster than we were led to expect.

There's absolutely no doubt that Truro and Portsmouth will go as they are both very small. Bristol is safe because of it's size and location. If Southampton is staying and takes in Portsmouth and Dorset no doubt a new MC will be needed or could the existing one be extended?
Isn't Exeter quite a big MC and didn't it get 3 ILSMs plus mail also goes via it's airport. Where would Exeter mail go - Bristol?

hi i work in the Dorset Mail Centre, we have heard that Exeter is a failing m/c and about the same size as our m/c, the other news is that because of our geographical nature we might be staying for a little longer than first thought, we have just had installed two Islm's and five walksort machines and three more walksort machine's put in winton del office and the talk of taking in some SP codes for delivery from Southampton. but thats the gossip from here...we also have night flights from B'mth Int Airport.

That's interesting. Is that the official verdict or a personal observation ? Either way I would be intrigued to find out more detail. Never did seem like a very efficient arrangement to me with so many obvious pitfalls and extra costs for wildly optimistic projected savings. If you are right the amount of waste will be colossal . I wonder who will take the blame for such a costly cock up?

Probably the main issue they have is if a CSS breaksdown in a DO and the local MC can't spare an engineer to fix it.

What, you don't think London would be a different situation from some rural area, as regards the time it would take to get someone there to fix it, and the amount of staff in that area who could be spared to go there?
