And after a while, you can work on points for style,
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.

Re: Current Mail Centres & Distribution Centres etc.
No chance of it going there - only if cancels having the 2 delivery offices moving in. This place is so tight for space and not very well thought out to take on more work.Stampy wrote:Heard from one of our drivers that CB is rumored to be going to Hemel....hagrid wrote:I have heard today that Gloucester and Cambridge are to close.
Does anyone have any more details of when and with whom???![]()

We say its too small the managers say it is compact!!!!!!!!!
If Cambridge move it could be Peterborough as all the 2nd class go there now.
IP to Norwich - I cannot see that happening either. There is not enough space there. The road structure is not very good for Norfolk and Suffolk and the mail would spend more time in the back of a lorry than in the sorting offices.
I can still see CB & IP in a purpose built building with posibly Norwich in the mix too.

Re: Current Mail Centres & Distribution Centres etc.
Sorry to put this question in an existing thread, but didn't think it was worth a new one!
Do any of you guys know what a 'road' is in MC context? Is it an area that the item will be yorked to or something?
Thanks

Outward mail,be it packets letters, whatever are sorted on the "Primary" which is the first level of sortation. Then it is sent to "secondary sort" which is in geographic selections (Irish/Scots,home counties, southwest etc,etc).shipmaster122 wrote:Sorry to put this question in an existing thread, but didn't think it was worth a new one!

Re: Current Mail Centres & Distribution Centres etc.
Ok, thanks for that. So what is this frame? It's not like in a Delivery Office, right? Also, does the same happen with items in priority locker?
So is a 'road' a york or is it a lorry? Would you be able to give me an example?
I also notice that on the audit tracking for ISF's, it says 'HWDC SIGNED FOR ROAD 3' (I think it's road 3 I can't remember exactly..)
Thanks

Ha Ha loungemaster
Just a thought. What if (for some reason) RM had to consolidate every single york in their network into one place.. I know they fold, but imagine the space they would take up, they must have a damn large amount of them! I think they bought a million sacks the other year, wonder what the figures on yorks are..
Edit: That must cause some confusion - put that in the York (as in destination York).

How come netherlands, france and belgium are not in EURO road?
anmd surely US and Canada should be road 3? How does it work if you know?

Re: Current Mail Centres & Distribution Centres etc.
volumes of mail, network arrangements etc
in every outward mc, there are 2 selections for letters flats and mech (packets are slightly different).
1. USA Canada and Europe
2. Rest of the world (residue)
This would then goto HWDC, ROW would go directly to road 3, whereas USA etc, would need to be primary sorted into road 1 & 2
Plus the part of the idea behind the road system, is that if you are unfamiliar with the place you are sorting to, you probably know the general area it is in, so can sort it to the correct road

Re: Current Mail Centres & Distribution Centres etc.
Thats another thing, I thought you just dump the mail into machines and it sorts everything? Surely in this day and age sorting is done by machines unless they cant read the address..? When I imagine the vast amount of mail - especially packets going into mcs, I wonder how much sorting must have to occur, with international and domestic mail both in the same sacks - im thinking of postboxes here. Just a thought, Lol.

Re: Current Mail Centres & Distribution Centres etc.
most mail is processed in 2-3passes tops on machinery
raw mail from a postbox goes into an outward plan, which has the busiest selections in the office and atleast one selection for every inward MC. (foreign is a 2 way split as said above outwith christmas)
mail that has to be transferred from the outward MC, is then taken to the recieving inward MC, and put through an inward 1 pass plan, which sorts the heavyist selections for that office again, and splits off the less common offices (i.e. SPDO's in the sticks) to be put through 1 most sort plan
As for rejects/manual, it's different locally, some offices use a roads system, others use a 2 frame sort.
as for amount of mail that gets sorted through automation, anything that is charged letter or large letter gets put through a machine of 1 kind or the other (there are exceptions, e.g. inverness has not machinery whatsoever, and has no plans to get any).
But according to what Moya said at the SW(?) AGM, there are plans for packet automation (again) in the works.
Seriously, it's like we are in a timewarp.
