Plymouth MDEC night shift team saw its engagement score jump 22 points in 2015 after agreeing on an action plan with four areas of improvement.
There are two night shift teams with around 80 colleagues and everyone was encouraged to contribute to the action plan.
To improve team morale, a tuck shop was introduced along with regular theme nights to raise money for charity.
‘We’ve had curry nights, Italian nights, and even a cream tea themed event,’ said night shift manager Jeff Maddison.
The team also wanted more opportunities for career development. As a result, work experience in other parts of the business is now offered and all jobs in Devon and Cornwall are advertised. Since the changes, a number of colleagues have progressed into new roles in delivery.
A new notice board was introduced to ensure the team had access to important information. WTLL sessions now also include team-specific performance updates to provide colleagues with support they need to provide a great service.
Being involved in decisions that affect them was the final area for improvement in the action plan. Challenged with finding a solution to how meal breaks are allocated, the team developed a four week rota. .

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
