The bulldozers have the former Royal Mail sorting office in their sights but, before the city centre landmark disappears forever, we take a look back at the history of the place.

Barberry Developments will knock down the building within the next few weeks as £54million plans to convert the site into student accommodation and shops get underway.

Ahead of that, we have raided the Telegraph picture archives to illustrate how the Bishop Street office was once a hive of activity, which processed thousands of items of post every day.

Opened in 1976, the head post office cost £2.6million to build, had nearly four acres of floor space and set out to employ 800 people.

It was built as a replacement for seven other offices around Coventry.

The building eventually closed in 2010 with operations moved to a new £70m building in Northampton.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
