Anybody ever enter this nationwide competition?
There were always loads of Royal Mail vans and wagons entered, with several posties from Nottingham, and my office, Derby, coming close to winning the grand final in the 1970's and 80's. Our heat was always held at Leicester in the wholesale market where there was a pub on site open all day! That was a total disaster because drinking was almost a part of a posties normal duty in those days. How we got the vehicles back to the office, I just don't know because both map-reading passengers and the drivers had a slurp or two of the amber nectar. It was always 12-hours at double on a Sunday, too - or was it double and a half? By the late 90's Royal Mail had stopped paying and the bar had long gone. As regards the suits, I quite liked this summer one as it was very lightweight - far better than the previous blue-serge one that made my underpants turn blue after rainfall when I was a telegram boy. All happy days.

Hi the Bandit, i used to enter the LDOY competition, i started in the late 80s and competed right up to the last year in 2003, i was a London based driver and realy enjoy the comp and meeting up with other R/M driver from all over the country in different places and hotels (the bars). its a shame the competition finished
