Empore Mail - Deorge V and the GPO

Post by Lounge Lizard »

I can recommend this exhibition at the Guildhall Art Gallery, London EC2 until 25th July to anyone with an interest in history. :Very Happy At £2.50 it's cheaper than a pint round there, except Wetherspoons. :Very Happy
Just two snippets of information from the wealth of exhibits on show ;
During the First World War the Grneral Post Office had its own batallion, the Post Office Rifles , with 12,000 postmen serving on "full civil pay plus free kit, rations and quarters." :sad:
In 1910 mail was mainly carried from the Railway Station to the Delivery Office "by horse drawn vehicle or FOOT" :crazy: and in 1935 "by motor van, motorcycle or bicycle" :Very Happy
and as for the size of the 1932 Morris van introduced for rural deliveries, you would only get 6 pods of mail in the back. :shock:
