During the First World War the Grneral Post Office had its own batallion, the Post Office Rifles , with 12,000 postmen serving on "full civil pay plus free kit, rations and quarters."
In 1910 mail was mainly carried from the Railway Station to the Delivery Office "by horse drawn vehicle or FOOT"
and in 1935 "by motor van, motorcycle or bicycle" and as for the size of the 1932 Morris van introduced for rural deliveries, you would only get 6 pods of mail in the back.
