Once upon a time, Royal Mail was 'part of the Post Office' and in turn was known as the 'GPO'. The GPO encompassed all services, postal, telephone, telegraph and telex, and there was always an affinity between staff who worked for 'The Company', and they were sometimes known as 'God's Poor Orphans'! I worked for the GPO as it turned into British Telecom, but I grew up with interests in Mail Rail, TPOs, First Day Covers, and in early days, playing at 'Post Office Counters'!
After more than 30 years of working with Post Office Telecoms/BT in their Traffic/Sales/Accounts departments, I wrote a book covering the last 50 years of my memories of the GPO/Post Office/BT. To newbies in the industry, it may seems strange that tasks were performed without computers; my book covers some of the transitions from paper to screen working. If you are 'slightly older' then you will identify with the topic of being part of a 'GPO Family' and you will find my writings of interest.
My first book, which you can buy now, is 'My GPO family:Supplied for the Public Service' by John Chenery.
