Yep, joined in 70,s, union rep went round sorting out who was to go sick,as a new boy it was strange idea, but was told in no uncertain terms to do as i was told !!. they were the good old days.

Rep used to go round the office near xmas to make sure you have time to do your pressie shopping on sick those were the days

i agree with all off your comments. it dosent make any different if you have a long sicking record or never taking a day off work. everyone gets treated the same. i same take time off if not well.

this did happen it happened to me when i was postman in 1995 they would always be going round telling people to have sick because they haven't had sick for some time ect.

this would never happen now.

i been working on a temporary contract for about 6 years casual for 2 and always on a knife edge as to whether i even have a job, place is def not like it used to be !

I remember when I first started working - as a graduate at The Post Office - people still talked about taking their 'Witneys or Witney Days'. This was a hang up from the introduction of sick pay into the Civil Service (I think) but may have been the post Office. In fact, having never seen it written it might be Whitney. I was told that this was named after the person who introduced a set number of paid sick days. The culture that was then created is that if someone had not been ill enough to use up their days they would 'book a Whitney day'. By the time I arrived the sick pay provision had been extended to 6 months and this custom and practice was dying out, yet from time to time people still talked about not having taken their Witneys.

I've heard from some oldens (one was my Dom ) that years ago the rep used to come around with a list of when you'd gone sick and tell you that next week or so,it was your turn to have a week off as you haven't had time off for a while.
Any of you guys had experience of this?Lucky beggars.

whitleys. you were expected to take your allocation of sick days per annum to provide o/t for your colleagues. what must be remembered was at the time everybody worked a 6 day week and the pay was poor. i think you were allowed 11 days a year.
