What were the managers like back then???

Post by mh80 »

To those who were there 15+ years ago, what were the line managers and DOMs like back then? ie. Were there as many? Did they ever end up going out on delivery?

at our office in macclesfield sk, the managers were incapable of doing a walk!!! they wouldn't do one under ANY circumstances!!! the nightmen got first shout, if no joy they would offer you 4 hrs for half a walk! (ready prepped) saturdays were no problem as you got double time for half a walk ! (minus mailsort) if they failed after all this, they were just failed, and the person on the next day got the full walk hours!!!! regards dongash opg macclesfield sk :dance :dance :dance :dance :dance :dance :dance

no they never went out of dly like the post above me states they always offered O/T to get the work done or cancelled a 2nd dly if desperate

my experience was that the managers were better than had worked there way up thru all the different jobs and most were local and knew the area well and treated there staff a 100% better than this current shower

when we had a tough time i.e at xmas he would take all the guys that worked on to clear the facing and stamping late at night out for a pint or fish & chips round the corner

it was nice to show appreaction as well as just to say it

the managers years ago were all blokes who had done the job ie postman, phg, then manager. they were a lot stricter then ie timekeeping, appearance, clear frames etc, but i found as a whole fairer and easier to talk to if you had problems in or out of work. you still had to keep your distance with some as they couldn't be trusted!!!!! some things NEVER change!!!!! :dance :dance :dance :dance :dance :dance :dance

You're right mate. Since 1980, I've had one manager I respected. Ex-Army Sgt Major who could manage people. He might have taken his orders from those above him, but he never had to go whingeing to them whenever anyone stepped out of line. He dealt with it himself. These days, none of them seem to have any initiative and the slightest thing gets passed up to the next level. Albert Cookson. RIP.

Years ago you had a bit of respect for your Inspector ( DOM/Line manager)
because they had done the job themselves, and we all treated each other with
a degree of respect UNLIKE TODAY HOW TIMES CHANGE TUT TUT !!!
There was always one now and again that was the arse licker!
Nowadays they are all arse licking brown nosed bastards with no respect
for anyone or anything.
There was only one AI (assistant inspector) that run our office.
Now we have a DUM and six other dummys all stabbing each other in the back
its pathetic roll on retirement!!!!!

I remember the wooley army type jumper, urrggh. Also remember sorting the pools envelopes. What I miss the most is the code desks, that was the best job, getting paid for sitting typing and then when they brought the rest breaks in...... FANTASTIC :Very Happy

I remember when the job was a job then nothing like nowadays, we would always get a break when we came back from first delivery and the old little orange book we used to have for specials and recorded. The manager I used to have he used to be in the army and he would take no nonsense from anyone even to those above him too even when they wanted hours out of office he used to say over my dead body until he retired on health ground sadly :( current manager is useless at best of times

You aren't kidding there! Every single question they're asked recieves the same answer: "I'll check up and get back to you!" Bloody office boys.
