Can Blaenavon post office be saved?

CONCERN has been raised for the future of the post office in Blaenavon, following an announcement that the current service will close on Tuesday, November 25, following the resignation of the subpostmaster. The existing premises are also no longer available, so a new operator and premises are being sought.

Torfaen AM, Lynne Neagle held a meeting, attended by a senior representative of the Post Office.

Ms Neagle said: “The onus is now on the Post Office to identify someone to take over the service or to speak to businesses and other local organisations that may be interested in operating a post office from their premises.

“The Post Office recognises this is a valued service well-used by local residents and it will be pulling out all the stops in the coming weeks to resolve this situation.”

One concerned resident is Phyllis Roberts, 90, who, like many others, uses the service for banking and her pension. She said: “I would be lost without it as I have no transport to get to another post office. It is always busy, being used by the elderly and local businesses.”

Post Office advisor Gaynor Davies said: “The new owner of Blaenavon Post Office would benefit from an investment programme and ongoing training aimed at ensuring the best possible customer experience.”

The nearest Post Offices for customers are in Forgeside or Abersychan.
