What is horizon?

I've heard it mentioned several times on here, and on the UK receipts for prepaid CoP - 'Horizon Certificate of Posting'. What is it?

Horizon is the computer sytem used in Post Offices

a horizon certificate of posting is one produced via that computer sytem rather than the former postcard sized proof of posting which customers would complete with up to 10 addresses.

an Horizon COP does not contribute to the operating costs of any post office.

You find the barcode number (two letters, then nine numbers, then two letters), which will be present if you paid for a suitable service, and put that into the tracking facility on Royal Mail’s website.

It would be far more appropriate to post this in the Customer forum.
