Baroness Thatcher was said last night to be undergoing "precautionary" medical checks at St Thomas's Hospital in London.

The reason for the treatment was not clear. But a Conservative Party spokeswoman said: "We have been in touch with her office and we wish her well."

Friends of Lady Thatcher, 82, have been concerned about her health in recent months, and she has scaled down her public appearances on the advice of her doctors.

Last September she made a well publicised visit to No 10, where she spoke to Gordon Brown – then riding high in the polls.

In January the Tory leader David Cameron presented the former prime minister with a lifetime achievement award at the Morgan Stanley Great Britons Awards in central London. Then last month Lady Thatcher, who served as prime minister from 1979 to 1990, attended the unveiling of a statue of herself in the House of Commons, which she described as "an honour", and joked that "I might have preferred iron but bronze will do," in a reference to her nickname as "the Iron Lady".

In 2005, Lady Thatcher spent a night on the coronary ward at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, before leaving with a "clean bill of health" and telling reporters: "I'm fine, I'm fine. I feel fine."

In 2002 she suffered a number of small strokes. At that time, her office issued a statement announcing she was cancelling public engagements.

A spokesman said: "Over recent months Lady Thatcher has suffered a number of small strokes ... [Her] doctors have told her that these can neither be predicted nor prevented. They have therefore told her to cut back her programme at once and in particular to avoid the undue strain that public speaking places on her.

"With great regret, she has decided to abide by this advice and to cancel all her speaking engagements."

Last night Sky News's political editor Adam Boulton said he had spoken to friends who had recently hosted Lady Thatcher, who didn't know "where she was or who they were or why she was there".

As Ricky Tomlinson said in his programme about the Coal Industry , they won't need coal in the place she's going to soon , as it'll be more than hot enough .

He said he'll be having a celebratory pint or two on that day .

I believe they have to have all these obituary programmes ready for TV and articles prewritten for the posh papers . Sky TV ran one by mistake on the Queen Mother before she'd popped her clogs . Needless to say , the person responsible for the screening got the sack LOL

Just heard she has been in for test's and everything's is ok with nothing to worry about!. Even though they could not find a pulse and their was no heartbeat!. FOR SHE HAS NO HEART AND NEVER DID!!!.

Five years ago Thatcher's doctors advised her to stop public speaking. We would all be a lot better off if that advice had been given and acted on 25 years earlier.

Education Secretary (1970 - 1974)

When the Conservative party under Edward Heath won the 1970 general election, Thatcher became Secretary of State for Education and Science. In her first months in office, forced to administer a cut in the Education budget, she was responsible for the abolition of universal free milk for school-children aged seven to eleven (Labour had already abolished it for secondary schools). This provoked a storm of public protest, and led to one of the more unflattering names for her: "Thatcher Thatcher, Milk Snatcher". However, she also successfully resisted the introduction of library book charges.

Her term was marked by support for several proposals for more local education authorities to close grammar schools and adopt comprehensive secondary education; support for this change in education policy was not restricted to the left. Thatcher also saved the Open University from being abolished. The Chancellor Anthony Barber wanted to abolish it as a budget-cutting measure, as he viewed it as a gimmick by Harold Wilson. Thatcher believed it was a relatively inexpensive way of extending higher education and insisted that the University should experiment with admitting school-leavers as well as adults. In her memoirs, Thatcher wrote that she was not part of Heath's inner circle, and had little or no influence on the key government decisions outside her department.
