Royal Mail on verge of collapse

ROYAL MAIL are on the brink of folding because of the spiralling costs involved in running a local football club.

Mail, who were formed in 1947, have struggled this year in the Reading Football League Senior Division. They are in debt and the final straw came when club stalwarts Jock Masson and Chris Ward announced they were giving up.

Masson, who has been with the club as player, manager, secretary and treasurer since 1962, has quit because of personal reasons.

And manager Ward will call it a day at the end of the season. Ward said: “Finances are the biggest problem. We owe £186 in pitch fees and we haven’t got any money as a club.

“Each home game in the Senior Division costs us £130, and if you have 13 players paying £5, that only comes to £65.

“You have to pay £25 for a linesman for away games, and then there are things like balls, kit and first-aid kit to pay for. The costs in the Senior Division are going through the roof, and the amount of fines are incredible.

“You even get fined £10 for ringing the result in five minutes late, and all the costs add up.â€
