TWO Harlow postmen, Rob Leonard and Bob Redman, have been shortlisted for a fundraising award in Royal Mail's annual 1st Class People Awards.

The awards are in three categories - the unsung heroes of the local community, 1st Class' charity fundraisers or those who performed a public-spirited act of bravery or helped with an emergency whilst out on their deliveries.

The Harlow pair cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End raising almost £6,188 for St Clare Hospice.

During their 1,000-mile journey they averaged up to 80 miles a day without a rest.

Jim Matthews, a manager at Harlow Delivery Office, said: "Everyone here rallied round to support this effort to raise funds for our local hospice. For the lads to make it onto the shortlist is great news. Luckily Rob and Bob are both van drivers because they came straight back to work after two weeks in the saddle."

The shortlisted candidates each receive £100 and go on to the east regional finals when judges will choose a regional winner in each category - Bravery, Community and Fundraising - to attend a national award ceremony on March 31.

The three regional winners each receive a cheque for £500 and a certificate. The national winners each receive £1,000 and one of the winners will be the overall winner of Royal Mail's 1st Class People Awards.
