MASKED raiders threatened staff at a Post Office in Hyde with a handgun, but were foiled by air freshener.

The two masked men entered the Cheetham Fold Post Office armed with a handgun and a large knife at about 10am on Tuesday, February 5.

But before the offenders could steal any money the alarm was triggered by a member of staff while another sprayed air freshner at the would-be thieves in a bid to distract them.

Panicked, the offenders ran off empty-handed down a nearby passageway which leads to a disused railway track and open fields.

A substantial reward leading to the arrest and conviction of these offenders has been offered by the Post Office.

Lethal

Detective Constable Steve Hatton, of Tameside CID, said: "This was a nasty attempt to rob a Post Office as the two offenders were carrying potentially lethal weapons and were brandishing them in front of staff and customers, which included mothers with young children.

"The fact they were prepared to carry out violence to steal cash shows these are two dangerous offenders who need to be caught.

"The Post Office have put up a substantial reward to anyone with information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of these offenders and I would urge anyone who knows anything to come forward."

The first man, who was carrying a Luger-type pistol, was about 30-40-years-old, white and wearing dark clothing and a dark coloured ski mask or balaclava which disguised his pale complexion. He was said to be about 6ft tall and of slim build. The second offender, who carried the knife, also wore dark clothing and a dark balaclava or ski mask and blue denim jeans. He was said to be smaller than his accomplice, about 5ft 10in tall, and of stocky build.

What a brilliant idea, using Air Freshener as a weapon. It never would have occured to me that it would be effective.

Well said bet thier big bonus's could do with some air freasher its a bit smelly with all the bull to why they got paid it.
