"PM will not save North Wales post offices
Feb 16 2008 by Tom Bodden, Daily Post
GORDON BROWN last night defended the proposed post office closure programme in North Wales.
The Prime Minister, in Llandudno for the Welsh Labour conference, said that his Government promised massive investment to keep post offices open.
The pattern of proposed closures, expected to case an outcry across North Wales, will be announced after the local government elections in May.
But Mr Brown told the Daily Post: “The previous Tory government was not prepared to put any money into help post offices, we have put £1.7bn in over the next three years to help local post offices.
“There is a machinery for appeal laid by the Post Office itself which goes right up to the head of the post office.
And where MPs are worried about closures of post offices, the minister in charge of post offices said he would meet them.
“I think there has been a number of reviews of original decisions: if I’m right about 22 of the original decisions have been reversed.
“I cannot comment on individual post offices: changes sometimes are necessary to take place, but with a process of consultation which is designed to give local residents the best chance.â€
