A POLITICIAN claims Post Office bosses in Cumbria have been gagged from speaking out about plans which could lead to their closure.

John Stevenson says he has discovered sub-postmasters and mistresses have had to sign a confidentiality agreement which would effectively stop them getting involved in any fight to save their businesses.

Post Office chiefs have, however, denied any sub-postmasters would be penalised for expressing their opinion on plans to overhaul Cumbria’s network of offices.

A consultation is due to start next month on proposals, which it is feared could lead to the closure of up to 50 branches across the county.

But Mr Stevenson, the Conservatives’ prospective parliamentary candidate in Carlisle for the next general election, fears the confidentiality claim means decisions have already been made on which outlets face the axe.

He said: “It is clearly intended to keep secret what the Post Office is intending to do and to stymie any action to stop it.

“It is very worrying that the people who would be most involved in any post office closures are the very ones that the Post Office is trying to gag.

“How can there be full consultation if sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses are not allowed to join in?â€

Someone has to pay for the Post Office Network.Either people pay more taxes for a subsidised network, more people use the network so it can pay people's wages, take out costs, or find money from elsewhere in the public sector (couldn't think of any wasteful areas ;-) ).

We bang the drum about cutting post offices, phone boxes etc... and then shout about taxes going up. Most of the growth in the country in the last ten years has been mass employment in the public sector. We have to fund it somehow, we have borrowed more than at any time in our history, mortgaged our sovreign crown jewels.

I am no political war monger, but if anyone thinks the last ten years have been an amazaing passage of financial management you heard it from me first that the obiturary for Gordon Brown will talk about how he got away with making the economy look good for ages, and then came crumbling down.

In this situation the public sector is the safest place to be regarding your job, as its harder to remove jobs and you will at worst get voluntary redundancy. You look at the private sector this year and it will be job loss ammouncements after job loss announcements. It has already started, look at friends provident yesterday, 600 went, and believe me there are more to come.

Please wake up and do some basic maths, it just doesn't add up!

Sadly Fozzie, you are dead right in what you say.

I have been banging on about Gordon Brown's slight of hand regarding the economy to anybody that would listen (not many) for years. When the s**t hits the fan all the money men will leave us like rats leaving a sinking ship and we will be left with fcuk all. Britain has had the for sale sign up ever since Thatcher. All that is left is the bargain bucket crap, and it will be this that we will have to start rebuilding with, that or handouts from other countries which will in the long run hold us to ransom.

That's right to a point, but Gordie got these Guardianista Middle Class types jobs for the boys as they're certain to vote New Labour . The Corporate PFI racket will bankrupt this country with Brown trying to keep the balance of payments down at least on paper !. New Liebour would be loathe to admit it but it's effectively collaborated in it's own redundancy by ceding power to multi-national corporations ,both of them corrupt to the core ,New Labour doesn't operate in our interests , and the more these spivvy people are appeased , the greedier they become .

Any Politician be it left or right wing has to have a wealth producing sector to pay for the non producing , it just depends how egalitarian it's done. unfortunately Gordie has cooked the books and the likes of Beardie Branson must be laughing all the way to the bank over Northern Wreck etc as the State bails out these institutions and then takes on all the risk .

New Liebour nannies us but the reality is that it hasn't much power or control , like a calf walking into a abattoir would describe their naivety with big business but His Toniness doted on them and Brown bends over backwards for them .

It falls down too often on it's own contradictions, there's too much blue sky /non-joined up thinking , it's weak and there's too many conflicting/contradictory agendas within the PLP and it relies too much on spin with no substance

Most European Centrist Governments have to make brutal choices to make to be electable but New Labour rely on a pliant parliament , poor or no opposition and apathy . They are neo-liberals , the only good thing you can say about them , is that Eton Dave and his boys are even nastier and would want to shaft everybody .

Only one other thing , how come the Italian Post Office has expanded it's services etc , whilst the British model is slash and burn , based on economics NOT Geographical location? ,.
