Help fight isolation, postmen told

Postmen should be trained to spot the tell-tale signs of loneliness and those in need, it has been claimed.
The Society of St Vincent de Paul said the human contact between postal staff and the vulnerable people far outweighs cost on a balance sheet. The organisation said the closure of 344 outlets in the last seven years is putting the citizens in danger of isolation and called for coherent Government action.

Minimum measures being demanded include a regular transport service to the nearest post office or town, personal telephones and alarms for the elderly, an out-of-hours medical service, and training for local community groups. It also wants postmen and women to be given training to identify those at risk of social isolation and need.
