One member of staff was reported saying 'we've been wiped out'
Wavertree residents are fearing for their packages after a sorting office was broken into on Wednesday night.
The delivery office on Wellington Road was broken into in the early hours of April 25, according to the Royal Mail , and on Thursday closed its gates to the public while police investigated the supposed theft.
One member of Royal Mail staff was overheard saying "We've been wiped out, totally clean!" as worried locals tried desperately to find out the fate of their packages.
On Facebook, those waiting on parcels shared their dismay, with some asking whether the sorting office needed more security.
The sorting office remained closed throughout the day but is expected to reopen on Friday after police have finished their initial investigation.
A spokesperson for the Royal Mail said: "Police are investigating this crime and we are assisting them with their enquiries. If customers have any concerns about their mail, they should contact Royal Mail customer services on 03457 740740 for further information.”
Post offices have been targets of thieves in the past, with a robbery taking place in broad daylight outside Childwall Post Office last year , when two men in balaclavas attacked a man making a cash deposit.

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
