Post office legal bid ruled out

A legal challenge over post office closures in Kent has been considered by the county council and ruled out.

The authority looked at the possibility "very seriously" and sought legal advice, Kent County Council (KCC) said.

But it said: "A judicial review cannot achieve the outcome that both KCC and the communities most desire. It cannot permanently stop the closure process."

The council was looking at options to help communities, such as working with MPs and retailers, it added.

The statement said: "KCC would only be able to mount a judicial review on concerns over the consultation process.

"The best outcome that this could achieve would be a repeat of the consultation process, but this could take 12 months and we understand that a successful judicial review would not be able to force Post Office Ltd to re-open the branches."

Consultation 'too short'

Earlier this month, Post Office Ltd announced that 56 branches would close across Kent with the first ones winding up in the New Year.

Kent was one of the first areas of the country to see a six-week consultation get under way in October, alongside East Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

The government said cuts were needed because the network loses £4m weekly.

And it said four million fewer people were using post offices each week than two years ago, and losses had risen from £2 million a week in 2005 to £4m a week last year.

When the closures were confirmed, KCC leader Paul Carter said the consultation had been "a farce" and the process was "too short".

And why are PO's losing customers...........because the government have stopped services like TV licensing, road tax etc, people who can't see privatisation round the corner need to get down the opticians, New Liebour have screwed RM/PO well and truely.

And why are PO's losing customers...........because the government have stopped services like TV licensing, road tax etc, people who can't see privatisation round the corner need to get down the opticians, New Liebour have screwed RM/PO well and truely.

People are now renewing licenses etc on-line now, so should the government attempt to stop progress in an effort to keep all the POs going? How does on-line renewal services equate to privatisation? Is there ANY connection between the two, or is it just another excuse to knock the government of the day?
As an aside, I renew my car tax etc on-line, and it still generates a letter, so it's not all lost revenue.

No one, I'm sure, would have thought that there would be a backdoor process for these things - like road tax - being handed over to a third party to administer over whom we have no control. New Labour have "outsourced " loads of stuff to the likes of Crapita to cock up and make things worse .

Perhaps this is the real reason why POs are loosing so much money. This profit has now been passed on to high street banks (is there a pattern) such as Northern Rock, Barclays and all the others. Brown does seem to want to help out the "city" more than the local communities.

It makes me laugh as at one time , the big banks wouldn't touch the likes of "Waynetta Slob " from 7 S**t Street , Sink Estate on benefits with a barge pole , they used to call those accounts "lemons " as even years ago it'd cost the banks £60 per year to run a current account .

I know some Social Staff and they were under orders to have "informed choice discussions " with their "cilents " to switch to direct payment .

Let's just say Gordon has friends?
