Plans to close Haringey delivery office under fire

Haringey’s opposition group has warned that the company’s plans to close the delivery office on Muswell Hill Broadway would be a “massive blow” to residents, businesses and local groups.

Royal Mail wants to move deliveries and collections from Muswell Hill to its site on Station Road, Wood Green, as the growth in electronic communications continues to reduce demand for its services.


It has begun talks with the Communication Workers Union and staff employed in the affected offices.

But the Liberal Democrats have called on Royal Mail to open up discussions to members of the public as well.

Their letter states: “The nearest delivery office is in Wood Green, which involves at least two bus journeys to reach, there being no direct bus route, nor train/tubes between these areas.

“Parking at that location is also very scarce, with most of Wood Green covered by controlled parking zones.

“Inevitably, parents, older people and people with poor mobility would be hit hardest by this.”

The letter – signed by Fortis Green councillor Justin Hinchcliffe on behalf of nine other Lib Dem councillors – includes an offer to meet with Royal Mail to discuss the future of the depot.

Royal Mail promised in a statement that there would be “no impact on deliveries to our customers” if the proposed move went ahead.

It added: “The postmen and women who work in Muswell Hill delivery office would continue to serve the local community, delivering a high-quality service to our customers.”

Royal Mail also pointed out that the Wood Green office is open for longer, has parking spaces for customers and benefits from an electronic booking-in system for items that could not be delivered.

It also features a customer service point, where people can drop off pre-paid parcels.

The company said: “If the move goes ahead, detailed planning would take place to ensure a smooth transition for our operations, our people and the service we provide to our customers.


“We have a strong track record of managing operational change in our business and we work with our staff and our unions to give them the opportunity to discuss the implications in detail.

“We do not expect there to be any job losses as a result of this proposed relocation.”
