Supermarket car park becomes Royal Mail delivery base in aftermath of Storm Callum

As well as all the disruption caused by Storm Callum, people in Carmarthenshire might have missed out on all their mail today, had it not been for a supermarket.

The Carmarthen sorting office's fleet of Royal Mail vans were in danger of being stranded by floodwaters at the weekend .

As well as the potential for thousands of pounds worth of damage to the vehicles, there was the chance no mail would be delivered.

Fortunately, on Saturday, the fleet was moved to a car park well away from the flooding, where the vans could deploy safely and on time.

The car park in question belonged to Morrisons in Pensarn, just outside the town centre.

Simon Griffiths spotted the strange sight of all the postal vans parked at the supermarket and filmed it.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: "The yard around our Carmarthen Delivery Office was at risk of flooding from the River Towy.

"As a precautionary measure our delivery office manager moved the empty delivery vehicles to the nearby car park at Morrisons supermarket to ensure there would be no disruption to the postal service.

"We are grateful to the manager at Morrisons for showing such community spirit in the circumstances. There was no impact to any mail, and the water is now receding."

A spokesman for Morrisons said: "We're pleased we could help out."
