Firefighters rescue puppy after postman on rounds spots house fire

'If it had not been for the eagle-eyed postman it might have been serious incident'

Firefighters rescued a puppy from a blazing house after an eagle-eyed postman spotted a fire in a kitchen.

The postal worker was passing by the semi-detached home at about 1.30pm today in Severn Crescent, Edith Weston, near Oakham in Rutland, when he noticed the flames.


The postman rang the fire service who raced to the scene.

Chris Hyde, watch manger at Oakham fire station, said: “When we got there a neighbour told us there was puppy in the house which was locked.

“We forced entry into the house and sent two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus in.

“They found a Chocolate Labrador puppy in a cage in the hall.

“They opened the door to the cage and the puppy, which was female, ran straight out.


“The fire was caused by an oven glove left on top of a cooker. They extinguished the fire.

“If it had not been for the eagle-eyed postman it might have been serious incident.

“We would urge people to ensure they never leave cookers on and never leave anything on top of cookers.”
