Postal workers in Oxford are set to deliver a double strike blow to homes and businesses.
Staff in the delivery office in Oxpens Road are requesting a fast-track ballot after six jobs were made redundant. And they will join workers across the county who are to ballot as part of a national dispute over pay which could spark the first national walkout in more than a decade.
Oxfordshire Communication Workers Union representative Bob Cullen said: "Executive action has been taken to make six positions redundant and although those individuals have been re-employed elsewhere in the business, it means deliveries are heavier, we will be working a longer day and we will be struggling to complete jobs."
But bosses claim the union has reneged on an agreement over changes at the Oxford office. Royal Mail spokesman Sue Dakin said: "We are astounded that, having reached a signed agreement with the union over changes in our operation that will help us to become more efficient at the Oxford delivery office, the union has now backtracked on its original position."
The affected areas will cover the OX1 and OX2 postcodes, which include Botley, the city centre and north Oxford.
Nationally, the union has rejected a 2.5 per cent pay rise and agreed a timetable for the ballot, which will start later this month.
The union said the Royal Mail's business plan would lead to 40,000 job losses, a pay cut for postal workers and the closure of mail centres and delivery offices.
Notice of the national intention to ballot will be served to the Royal Mail on Tuesday, with the result expected to be declared on June 7.
