MSP in Commonwealth stamps call

Calls have been made for a commemorative set of stamps to be issued to mark Glasgow's victory in securing the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
SNP backbencher Bob Doris lodged a motion at Holyrood asking for last month's announcement in Sri Lanka to be celebrated with a series featuring past and present Scottish sporting greats.

The Glasgow MSP wants the Royal Mail to issue a set similar to those produced when London won the right to host the 2012 Olympics and after England's victorious Ashes campaign in 2005.

Mr Doris said: "This would be a fine way of recognising Glasgow's achievement in securing the Games. My question to Royal Mail is, why not?

"We have a history of sporting success and our non-footballing heroes perhaps don't get the recognition they deserve."

Mr Doris now plans to write to schools in Glasgow to encourage youngsters to learn more about the nation's sports stars. He also wa
nts the Royal Mail to work with the city's youngsters to decide who appears on the stamps.

"Allan Wells, Liz Lynch, Dick McTaggart, Wullie Wood, Chris Hoy, Caitlin McClatchey and Yvonne Murray are great role models for our young folk and having them recognised in this way could act as a spur for youngsters to get involved," he added.

"They are only a few examples, others will have their own favourites and we have many unsung heroes and champions right across the board from karate to sailing.

"The Royal Mail have told me that they are unsure if there is enough popular support for this so I suggest all MSPs and people across Glasgow use the same spirit that helped win us the Commonwealth Games and let the Royal Mail know that Scotland's Commonwealth Games win and Scotland's sporting greats deserve recognition."

There's no great appetite amongst the general public for games, either commonwealth or olympic. Mr. Doris is typical of todays politicians, he equates
popular support with whatever a bunch of politicians want, and not the reverse. The vast sums of money being wasted on these "games" would most
definitely be spent better elsewhere.

RM Group surpassed themselves with commerative stamps for the Isle of White , when it should have been Wight . They'll be collectors items though.

Yes norbet, I remember. I've great faith in Royal Fail going one better, if commemrative stamps are ever issued for the Isle of Woman, err,

One might expect an MSP to have the sense to realise, firstly, that the Olympic Games are generally considered to be significantly more important than the Commonwealth Games and, secondly, that special postage stamps might be expected in the year that the games actually occur in Scotland as was the case in 1970 and 1986.
