A PLUCKY postman delivered an early Christmas miracle by rescuing a Sedgemoor pensioner involved in a kitchen fire, while out on his round.
John Bull, 38, who lives in Cheddar, was posting letters in Shapwick, near Bridgwater on Tuesday (December 11) when he heard a smoke alarm coming from a house up the road.
He ventured inside the property after seeing smoke billowing from the kitchen door and encountered a distressed elderly woman trying to deal with a pan fire.
John told the Mercury: "I was doing my normal rounds when I heard a smoke alarm going off and saw smoke coming out of the kitchen.
"An elderly lady her 90s, had a taken a flaming pan and put it on a Zimmer frame - she couldn't do anything to put it out. I went in, took the pan off her and covered it with a damp cloth.
"With the things in the kitchen the house would have gone up and her life would have been in danger."

The shaken resident, who asked Mr Bull if he was a fireman, was extremely grateful to the postman for his act of bravery.
But John, who is hanging up his postman's cap to become a police officer next year, played down his part in the drama.
He said: "The fire alarm was the thing that saved her - I think anyone would have done what I did."
