THE Royal Mail has come in for a lot of stick recently for its planned closure of post offices - and The Diary cannot see any reason why it should not come in for a bit more.
We've all received those cards from the postman telling us that he tried to deliver a parcel but there was no-one in. Although annoying, it is understandable and normally you just pop down to the delivery office to pick it up when you can.
Well one York man faced a round trip of around 550 miles - which the AA say would take 12 hours - to pick up two packages sent to his home when he and his wife were out.
Tom Ginty, of Deer Hill Grove in Clifton Moor, received a delivery card telling him to schlep up to Arbroath in Scotland on Tuesday, when he and his wife were out. The parcels were actually for his daughter who had sent them to his address.
Mr Ginty told The Diary: "I think that somewhere along the line the Post Office has been given this batch of cards for the wrong post office and they have just started issuing them willy-nilly without checking. It's a bit of a joke, it's pretty obvious I wouldn't be going up to Arbroath for the parcels and it's pretty obvious they're at the local delivery office."
A spokesman for the Royal Mail said it was down to a plain old fashioned mix-up.

He said: "Unfortunately, about six incorrectly addressed forms were inadvertently posted through customers' doors. Royal Mail apologises for what was simply human error."

He carried on, "But don't worry, as we'll sack 6 full time, pension due, overpaid, under-worked posties as compensation." Easy mistake to make, how often do we read the cards? Can anyone remember the phone number printed on it? I remember when a PHG spend part of the morning stamping the cards with the DO address and phone number. Not all change is for the better, especially in RM.
