150 Grimsby Royal Mail staff return to work as strike is resolved

Grimsby postal workers have returned to work after staging a walk out this morning over allegations of bullying and harassment by management.

Around 150 members of staff staged industrial action at the Royal Mail Delivery Office on Fotherby Street, as they all walked out of the office at around 9am and started a picket line at the front gates.


The staff were protesting over allegations of bullying and harassment from management and were adamant that they would not be returning to work unless it was resolved.

The strike action lasted until around 1.15pm, when representatives from the Communication Workers Union emerged from negotiations with senior management saying that the issue had been resolved and that a full investigation into the allegations would be commencing tomorrow morning.

Union representative Kevin Lester said: "We have now resolved the issues that led to strike action taking place this morning.

"A full investigation is due to start in the morning and we will continue meeting with senior management over the coming days.

"Due to this the staff are now returning to work.

"There are no plans for any further industrial action tomorrow."

The strike by postal workers has meant that no post has been delivered today in Grimsby, Cleethorpes and the surrounding rural towns and villages.

It is believed that this could lead to a backlog of post that needs to be delivered, however staff have said that this should not be an issue and it is not hard for them to catch up.

One member of staff said: "There will be a bit of a backlog of post now, but it should not be too difficult for us to sort out.

"It really just means that when we are doing our rounds we have to post maybe four letters instead of one or two.

"We are going to be going around the same houses anyway."

Earlier today a Royal Mail spokesperson issued a statement expressing disappointment that strike action had been taken.

They said: "Royal Mail is disappointed that un-balloted industrial action has taken place this morning at Grimsby delivery office. We sincerely apologise to customers in the area for any disruption to their mail services. We are doing all we can to minimise this disruption and we encourage our staff to come back to work.

"The customer service point remains open for the pick-up of mail. Royal Mail is fully committed to the process to resolve concerns of postal workers based in Grimsby by following the national jointly agreed framework with the Communication Workers Union.”

From what i can gauge - Morale is very low - Overtime being thrown about like confetti re staffing shortages
Job become a chore/means to an end rather than how it should be percieved/how it use to be !!
Have we lost identity with the customer base, re new working practises ? the personal touch ??
Some interesting things in pipeline re new sickness scheme currently under discussion ?
looking forward to seeing outcome of that re CWU and Company
Pension accept it takes time to get this going - but how much time ??
only the banter/friendship within depots seems to be enabling us to do the job-if that goes-will we be in meltdown
