A campaign to turn postboxes yellow in Cardiff to mark Geraint Thomas' historic Tour de France win has been launched.

Staff at The Bikeshed in Pontcanna posted the suggestion on social media as "a bit of fun" recalling the golden postbox that commemorated Thomas' Olympic gold medal.

The idea quickly gained support and now the popular bike shop has contacted Cardiff council and Royal Mail to back the bid.

One of owners of The Bikeshed, John Higgins, said: "We are all enthusiastic cyclists and have been hanging on Thomas' achievements stage by stage.

"The yellow postbox was an idea that has since received huge support on social media and we hope it will be taken up in Cardiff, and, maybe throughout Wales, to mark his historic win."

Thomas effectively won the Tour de France after finishing third in the stage 20 time trial on Saturday.

A tweet by The Bikeshed has received thousands of likes and has been retweeted by hundreds of supporters, including MP for Cardiff West Kevin Brennan.

John said: "We have had loads of responses to the idea – some saying every postbox in Wales should be yellow!"

When the shop first thought up the idea they envisaged the postbox in Conway Road in the city but John said they could be placed anywhere.

He said: "When we originally thought up the idea we thought it would be fun to have it on Conway Road.

"But actually it could be good to have have it outside his old school in Whitchurch or perhaps in Cardiff Bay – somewhere where lots of visitors to Cardiff would see it."

Olympian Geraint, 32, has visited The Bikeshed several times and John said all of the staff are familiar with him.

John said: "It is absolutely terrific. It couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

"He's had a couple of repairs done in the shop and his dad is a customer here too."

Although the yellow postboxes could become a reality, I Loves The 'Diff had even grander ideas:

No yellow postbox for Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas says Royal Mail

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail extends its congratulations to Geraint Thomas for winning the 2018 Tour de France.

"We have no plans to paint a postbox to mark his Tour de France win.

“London 2012 was a unique occasion. The UK hosted the Games and our athletes performed extraordinarily well.

"Because of our status as the host nation, Royal Mail chose to mark the achievement of our athletes through gold postboxes as well as stamps."

Thomas has a gold postbox on Castle Street in the capital, to mark his gold medal at the 2012 Olympics for the cycling track men’s team pursuit.
