Swindon's Royal Mail centre to host engineering open day

THE Royal Mail centre in Swindon is inviting families to come along to an Engineering Open House Day event next week.

More than 30 companies will be at the centre on August 3 from 10am to 12.30pm to inspire kids to take up a career in engineering.

The event has been organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

It will provide an insight into what an engineer's working day is like and how important their work is to the business with practical insights and a day full of fun.

The centre is one of 30 venues taking part in the nationwide event.

The UK faces a nationwide skills shortage, as 203,000 people with engineering skills will be required each year to meet demand through to 2024, but it’s estimated that there will be an annual shortfall of 59,000 engineering and technicians to fill these roles

The event coincides with the government designating 2018 as the Year of Engineering.

Nigel Fine, IET Chief Executive, said: "There’s never been a better time to engage with and inspire children and parents to help them better understand how exciting and diverse a career in engineering can be."
