Postman badly hurt in dog attack

A postman suffered serious leg injuries in a "prolonged" attack by two dogs as he delivered letters in Sheffield.

Police destroyed one of the dogs, a Bull Terrier-Bulldog cross, which had escaped from a garden in Birdwell Road, Grimesthorpe on Tuesday morning.

Officers are still trying to find the other dog, described as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier-Japanese Tosa cross.

The owner of the dogs was arrested under the Dangerous Dogs Act and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The complainant sustained serious injuries to his legs following a prolonged attack by the dogs.

"As a result of the attack he was taken to hospital where he has since undergone surgery to his injuries that are described as serious and may need further surgery in the future.

"Both dogs eventually ran off after members of the public went to assist.

"The dogs were seen running off in the direction of Wincobank Lane."

The dog which remains at large is approximately 18 months old, brown and white and is wearing a brown leather collar with the name Macey on it.

Police are warning the public not to approach or handle the dog but to call the police immediately.

I fear that after this horrific attack by these particular dogs the postie in question will find it very hard to get over the trauma suffered if indeed he or she is capable of returning to work. I wish the postie a speedy heartfelt recovery.

very nasty could end up with PTSD & panic attacks etc , though I doubt he'll get much support off "caring" RM /ATOS , hope that idiot with those dogs and even the breeder as they have to come from someone gets locked up , remember that story about the child in St Helens and her grandmother that was off her tits on blow and cheap booze that was supposed to be looking after her . . Idiotic Chav/gangster mentality .

I work in Sheffield (at the MC, not the CDO) but do know who it is that was attacked and it was very nasty. Haven't many more details than has been reported (other than it was a Parcel Force driver that initially came to the rescue) but will keep you informed if I hear anything else.

There was a wip round for the guy last night on the night shift and £250 was raised, with plenty more to come from other shifts. Little comfort but it's the least that can be done.

Hopefully he'll make a full recovery and receive the level of compensation he truly deserves - those type of dogs aren't pets and the owners should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
